What's happening in Hot HR this week

Welcome to all new members - we now have over 1,440 members and the group is really warming up with some great discussions and activity.

SPEED READ FROM WARD HADAWAY:
* Determining holiday pay for those working atypical hours
* Prospect of success in reasonable adjustment case
* A fair redundancy procedure can involve a pool of only one

In the case of reasonbale adjusment this is particulary relevant for employers as the EAT's judgment puts forward the suggestion that if a disabled person has not told a prospective employer that they require reasonable adjustments to be made, then such a claim will have no reasonable prospect of success.

DISCUSSIONS: Lots of great discussions this week, here's a snap shot:

What's happening in Hot HR this week

Welcome to all new members - we now have 1,365 members and the group is really seeing some great discussions and activity.

This week's update from Hot HR, provides you with the Speed Read from employment lawyers Ward Hadaway and a sample of interesting discussions and updates from the group for you to to read, join in and comment on.

WARD HADAWAY SPEED READ 20/2/12:
*Hands off my clients
*Can indirect age discrimination be justified by cost?
*Surrogate mothers - do they have rights?

DISCUSSIONS: Lots of great discussions this week, here's a snap shot:

* Mediation - woefully under-used but the government is actively promoting it as alternative to tribunals. I have a new checklist on "Mediation in the Workplace" which members may find useful.

* Should employers insist on 'proper english?'

* I often see smaller companies where the HR lead is the only women on the senior management team. I'm interested in members experience of this and how it affects their effectiveness.

* I'm creating a guide for line managers on how to handle employees who go out on maternity leave and a fact sheet for the employee. Does anyone have something similar they can share? Thanks!

The need for a good CV

I have just revamped a CV for a friend looking for a new role, whilst the content was there, the format and layout needed a helping hand. It just wasn't the finished article, but they thought that it was ok and hadn't really questioned it.

Going through this process made me think about the quality of CV's that are out there. I also found myself asking do we still need a great CV these days.

Do you still need a CV with social media and online applications changing the way employers recruit?

My opinion was, and still is, that yes you absolutely still need a CV. Not only do you need a CV but it has to be a good one.

I found these statistics that support why a good CV with maximum impact is so important:

•almost a third only read a CV for 1 minute before making their decision
•the main reason for rejecting a CV is irrelevance to the job
•50% say the cover letter is as important as the CV

So, it's clear that first impressions count, your CV has to do the talking for you in the first instance and presentation is everything. If you don't provoke any initial interest then you won't even get a chance to impress in an interview.

It goes without saying that the job market is more competitive now than ever before, and this is unlikely to change in 2012. This is why your CV needs to standout! You need to make your CV a must read and sell your skills, make it a document that makes them want to offer you a job.

It isn't just about listing responsibilities from your last jobs, this alone won't secure you an interview, but focussing on what you have achieved within those duties and responsibilities, and how you can successfully build upon them and deliver in your next role just might.

You need to think about the format, layout, wording, and fonts and how best to present all your information, it's a hard process to get right, but once you have cracked it, it really just needs a tweak and update when you look for a new role.

If you do need to write a cover letter ensure that you use this opportunity to make your application specific to the role and highlight why youo are the best person for the role.

As for social media, I do believe that you must consider social media as part of your CV, utilising LinkedIn profiles etc., just consider how you want to be portrayed.

Social media an online recruitment is an excellent way of looking and applying for jobs, but the majority of the time you will still be asked to submit a CV. Even you if you don't have to submit your CV, having your CV next to you whilst you complete any application forms makes it so much easier and less time consuming having the information to hand, and at least you have it for next time!

So in response to my initial questions: the CV still lives on; better make it a good one!

Hot HR Hot Spot 'Why can’t we all just get along? (or the art of being nice)' by Alison Mulholland from nef

Why can’t we all just get along? (or the art of being nice)

I work with two of the loveliest people (hi Lois and Laura) and they always make you feel that nothing is a bother for them. This, in turn, makes me want to help them. Simple. So why is this so hard for people to understand? In the course of most people’s working life they will be hassled. Shouted at and belittled and, for some customer- facing staff, there are even more serious situations. Unbelievably, at Transport for London there were 1,400 assaults on staff in 2010/11 and this is a reduction from the amount the year before!

Although most of us won’t face anything as bad as being physically assaulted it can be easy to remember that, in HR, we are dealing with real people with real problems. For example, I have often seen managers complain that people are getting stroppy over the fact that their pay is wrong, forgetting that is how people pay their bills and, of course, you can never really know people’s financial situation. One particular time sticks out for me where I had one senior HR manager mess up on someone’s pay which saw them get only half of what they should be getting. The manager’s feeling was that the member of staff should be able to cope on half pay which would mean the manager not having to confess her mistake and instead just adjusting next month’s payroll. Had she spoken to the person concerned (as I did) they would have discovered that the staff member had just moved house, was flat broke after stumping up a large deposit and really needed the pay she was owed.

I try to work with a customer service mindset, not just treating others how I would like to be treated but using the phrase “what sort of person do I want to be” to influence how I work. In HR we often have to deal with difficult and sometimes heartbreaking situations and dealing with these issues in a sensitive manner can make all the difference to the employees involved and often results in a better outcome all round.

The other side of being a nice person is that people will want to work with you – we all know horror stories about people who have had bad service in shops and won’t go back to them – we in HR must make sure we give the customer service to all our customers (and that includes those that are off with bad backs but posting pictures of themselves on Facebook doing somersaults, those caught stealing red handed).

So try and be a Ms or Mr Do-As-You-Would-Be-Done-By and see what happens.
